OKC Gardening Class Guide
Gardening can be a fun stress reliever, and it can make your yard look beautiful. However, if you are a new gardener, it can be hard to get started and know which practices are the best ones. Gardening classes can be a huge help for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. Oklahoma City offers many choices, and we have compiled a list of some of the most popular gardening classes in the metro so you can become a gardening pro in no time!
Located in the Paseo Arts District of Oklahoma City, SixTwelve hosts weekly gardening classes that are also great for the community. SixTwelve’s community garden, known as the Forever Food Forest, provides inexpensive and nourishing food for members of the OKC community. Its goal is not only to provide food, but to educate citizens on how to grow a sustainable urban community garden. Attending a class will not only teach you how to garden, but it also provides you with volunteer experience maintaining their garden as well. Classes are 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Best of all, all of these programs are free to the public! You can read more about SixTwelve’s Forever Food Forest here.
Sustainable OKC is another organization in Oklahoma City that hosts weekly gardening classes within their community garden. They are an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that exists to “facilitate grassroots action, foster awareness of sustainability, and serve as an informational and networking resource in the Oklahoma City area.” Their “CommonWork” gardening class is from 9 a.m to noon Saturdays at Sustainable OKC’s urban farm, 2210 North Olie Ave. These sessions are free.
Not only does the Myriad Gardens in downtown Oklahoma City have a variety of gardening classes, but they also have horticulture lessons and gardening lectures as well. Their “Hort 101” series discusses gardening, landscape design, and maintenance. They also have a series of Cocktails and Conversation classes on different aspects of garden care. Classes have registration fees for non-members but are free for members.
